e only renewable energy to cover our energy consumption Experts agree that Solar Energy will be needed in very large quantities (more than 3 GTep*/ year!), even if accompanied and leveraged by other forms of energy (geothermal, wind, nuclear, CRW).The World Energy Council sees three different Scenarios for the deployment of Energy sources. All of them count on a huge amount of Solar Energy
The energy coming from the sun is immense. The potential of Solar Energy is at least 100 times larger than any other renewable energy source. However, the specific surface energy density is relatively low (max. 6.5 kWh/m2/day).
The cost factor
Considering todays energy costs and the suns energy delivery, assuming a conversion efficiency of 15% and approx. 310 days of sunsine, a solar energy solution generates 3 to 30 USD/m2/year (at approx. 6.5 kWh/m2/day).
So the maximal cost per m2 (at 10 y amortization time, 33% of revenues used for amortization) is 10 to 100 USD/m2 active area. Current solutions cost at least 10 times as much!
