1) GREEN TIPS AT HOME
1. Use the washing machine when you have full load. This saves energy and water. You can also use the run-off water to wash the floor. Don't use the dryer; use natural solar heat instead in order to save energy.
2. Save energy by using proper size of pans to cook your food. Covering with a lid also saves energy.
3. Cut energy consumption by using electrical appliances that are energy efficient. Switch off appliances when not in use. Solar heater is the best choice for heating water.
4. Turn off the light when you leave the room.
5. Don't leave the red light of the TV on, even if the TV was off: this consumes energy.
6. Don't use resistance heating: they consume a lot of energy.
7. Fill the sink with water to wash vegetables or dishes. By doing this you can save 15 times of water when compared to doing it under a running tap.
8. When brushing your teeth, use water in a container instead of from a running tap. Use a tumbler of water and save liters.
9. Take a shower instead of bathing using the bathtub.Install dual-action flush in your toilet. This can reduce water consumption.
10. Washing a car with a hose wastes a lot of water; wash your car with water in a pail.
11. Promote and support local recycling programs. Recycle your trash as much as possible.
12. Use cloth towels to wipe kitchen work tables and counters instead of using paper towels. Cloth towels can be reused.
2) GREEN TIPS FOR SCHOOLS
1. Plant trees in the school garden. They help to beautify the school compound. Trees also take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen.
2. Use recycle bins to sort out your waste like paper, beverage packages; cans, glass and plastic. Ask the director board to contact recycling plants.
3. Keep the school compound clean by using the litter bins. Let the habit grow in your community.
4. Use ordinary (metallic) paper clips instead of color paper clips which contain cadmium that is toxic when disposed of.
5. Buy writing materials made of recycled paper. This helps to reduce the number of trees cut to produce paper.
6. Reduce paper consumption by using both sides. Reduce waste by using fountain pen and mechanical pencil.
7. Better rely on natural lighting. Leave windows open and switch off the lights and fan which are not in use or not needed. This helps reduce energy consumption.
8. Switch to solar powered calculators. This helps to reduce waste.
3) GREEN TIPS FOR OFFICES
1. Use public transportation to reduce air pollution and save on fuel consumption.
2. Encourage car pooling to reduce air pollution and fuel consumption.
3. Walk instead of driving to have a meal as it saves on fuel and reduces air pollution. Cut down on packaging materials to reduce waste.
4. Replace artificial plants with natural ones. Promote green environment and maintain oxygen content in the office atmosphere.
5. Promote paperless office. Send Email instead of mail and link up your computer network, as this cuts down printing jobs. This can save paper. Reuse computer print-out paper as your memo pads or telephone message pads. Reuse envelopes for internal mail.
6. Use your mug in the office instead of using non- biodegradable Styrofoam cups. This helps to reduce waste. Make your drinks in bulk, and have it together with your colleagues. This saves energy and is more sociable.
7. Newspaper, used paper and cardboard can be recycled. Set up a recycle bin for collection of used paper products.
8. When writing, printing or photocopying, make use of both sides of the paper.
9. Switch off lights/air-conditioner/computers/ photocopier when not in use. That saves electricity, a precious, non-renewable resource.
4) SHOPPING TIPS
1. Buy in bulk. The cost is usually much less and there is less wasteful packaging.
2. Avoid excessive packaging. The cost of the excess material is usually passed on to you and you get less product for your money.
3. Buy products with packaging made of recycled materials or that is recyclable or reusable.
4. Avoid impulse buying. Plan your shopping trips and make a list of the items you need.
5. Buy high-quality items. You won't have to replace them as often, saving you time and money in the long run for most products, in addition to reducing waste.
6. Consider renting specialty items that you use infrequently, such as camping equipment, skis, and perhaps automobiles.
7. Purchase organically grown produce whenever available.
8. Use rechargeable batteries; batteries release toxic heavy metals into the soil upon disposal.
