i rather believe:
knowing a bit of everything is better than knowing everything of a bit

You have not fully grasped the meaning of the wisdom.
There is nothing wrong with being knowledgeable in a variety of fields but such a person will not be able to specialize in any of them until and unless he focuses on one .
By the way there was a specific reason why I put this. Let's see if any of you can guess. (It was Um Waraqa who gave me the idea with her one or two word subjects :)....) i
It helped let out some steam, this is a big clue

I would like to add..
Is it a must that everyone specializes in a certain field?
In life we have: generalists and specialists
so is it wrong to be a generalist?

In my opinion, it is not a must but is strongly recommended.

Specialization these days may not be achieved except by seeking further education in that specific field
