I just completed reading two childrens books on the Hajj authored by Sakina bint Erik Marx (aka Erica Marx). The books are entitled "Princess Hajja Sumaiya" and "Hajj For A Basketball Star." The first book targets girls while the second book targets boys, but the basic lessons are the same. The books, which are in a colouring book format, are meant for young children from ages 6-11, are witten in a simple story style and outline the basics of the Hajj rituals.

"Princess Hajja Sumaiya" tells of how her parents go for Hajj and she stays with her grandmother who explains to Sumaiya each step of the Hajj her parents are taking from day to day. Little Sumaiya actually acts out the various rituals on her own with the guidance of her patient grandmother. In the end her grandmother gives her the nickname Princess Hajja Sumaiya.

"Hajj For A Basketball Star" is a story of a basketball player Wakil Walker who embraces Islam and is now ready to go for Hajj. The book walks the reader through each step of Wakil's Hajj and tells us some of the challenges he faces during his journey. In both of the books there are illustrations and exercises which can be used to teach the child more about the Hajj rituals.

The beauty of these books is that they are so easy to read and the author does not overwhelm the young reader with too much information. The books are both educational and entertaining. There is a nice glossary of words at the end of each book which parents and educators can go over with the children when talking about the Hajj.

These books are an excellent educational tool for parents and primary school teachers and I highly recommend them. I hope many Islamic bookstores will carry them on their shelves.
