Eid al Adha: A celebration of victory over temptation and the greatness of Allah

Yahya Abdul Rahman - Jan 20th, 2005

Beginning today, and the following two days, Muslims all over the world will celebrate Eid al Adha (the festival of sacrifice). Eid al Adha is celebrated each year the day after the Hajjis stand on the mount of Arafat and corresponds with the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah of the Islamic calendar. Non Hajji Muslims will wear their best attire and attend a special Eid prayer and listen to a short sermon, usually about the significance of this day. Those who can afford to, sacrifice either a sheep, cow or ram, as a symbol or commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his beloved son whom Allah saved at the last moment and an animal was sacrificed in his place. The meat from the Eid sacrifice is then distributed for consumption to family, friends, and to the poor and needy. Many people in North America pre-arrange to have their sacrifice made in a poor country to be distributed to very needy families there. Eid is usually a time when friends and family get together and extend Eid greetings and congratulations by saying "Eid-Mubarak," or ‘Taqabbal Allaahu minnaa wa minka' (May Allah accept from us and from you).

Each time Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha they once again recall the willingness of prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him and all of Allah's prophets) to obey Allah no matter what Allah ordered him to do. The Shaytaan (devil) tried to dissuade Prophet Ibrahim from carrying out killing his son and Prophet Ibrahim responded by throwing stones at the Shaytaan. In fact, on this day, Eid-al-Adha, the Muslim pilgrims, after gathering 70 stones on the plain of Muzdalifah coming down from off the mount of Arafat, will toss those stones at three pillars over the next three days in commemeration of Prophet Ibrhahim's stoning the Shaytaan and rejecting his temptations. With each stone tossed the Hajjis will cry out Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest).

Regarding Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his beloved son the Quran reads:

And he [Ibrahim] said after his rescue from the fire: "Verily! I am going to my Lord. He will guide me! My Lord! Grant me (offspring) from the righteous." SO We gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing boy. And when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allah), so look what do you think!?" "O my father! Do that which you are commanded InshAllah (if Allah wills), you shall find me of the patient."

Then when they had both submitted themselves to the Will of Allah and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering); and We called out to him: "O Abraham! You have fulfilled the dream (vision!" Verily! Thus do Wereward those who perform good deeds, totally for Allah's sake only. Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial and We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (a ram;) and We left for him ( a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times. "Salamun (peace) be upon Abraham!" Thus indeed do We reward the Muhsineen (good doers). Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves. (Ch 37:99-111 Quran)

On this day Muslims celebrate victory over temptation, the supremacy of submission over following one's desires, the noble example Prophet Ibrahim is for the believers, that Allah gives victory to those who submit fully to Him and that Allah is the greatest and beside Him there is no other. In these times when things do not look so good for the Muslim people's of the earth this is something to celebrate indeed.

Eid Mubarak my dear fellow believers.
