I usually find difficulties when wanting to register in some online facilities that require some payment

most of them usually require to pay by cheque, credit card or direct debit

I suppose all these methods require a bank account don't they?

I know that there's the western union service but they do not include it among the options
especially that I heard they require the name of the person who is going to pick up the transfer and his tel. number

I lately have asked a website if they accept payment via western union , but they replied by giving me their IBAN number which made me even more puzzled

so what is this? and does it work with western union?

I have no information on IBAN but it sounds like an internet banking scheme.

I will google it and see what I get.

Here's what I found on Wikipedia :
International Bank Account Number

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Bank_Account_Number#c olumn-one), search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Bank_Account_Number#s earchInput)
The International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is an international standard for identifying bank accounts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_account) across national borders. It was originally adopted by the European Committee for Banking Standards (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=European_Committee_ for_Banking_Standards&action=edit), and was later adopted as ISO 13616:1997 and now as ISO 13616:2003. The official IBAN registrar under ISO 13616:2003 is SWIFT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWIFT) and the IBAN registry is currently at SWIFT (http://www.swift.com/index.cfm?item_id=61332).
The IBAN was developed to facilitate payments within the European Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union). Customers, especially individuals and SMEs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_and_medium_enterprise), are frequently confused by differing national standards for bank account numbers. The IBAN is not yet used for routing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Routing_%28disambiguation%29), because the IBAN has not been widely adopted outside Europe, among other reasons. The ECBS (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=European_Committee_ for_Banking_Standards&action=edit) expects that adoption may take up to ten years, so it remains necessary to use the current ISO 9362 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9362) Bank Identifier Code system (BIC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9362) or SWIFT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWIFT) code) in conjunction with the BBAN or IBAN.
At present, the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) does not participate in IBAN. Any adoption of the IBAN standard by U.S. banks would likely be initiated by ANSI ASC X9 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI_ASC_X9), the U.S. financial services standards development organization.
Currently all European non-CIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Independent_States) countries, as well as some African countries, and Turkey participate in the IBAN system, while the rest of the world remains outside of it. British dependencies (except Gibraltar and the Crown Dependencies) don't participate in the IBAN system.
The IBAN consists of a ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1_alpha-2) country code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_code), followed by two check digits (represented by kk in the examples below), and up to thirty alphanumeric characters for the domestic bank account number, called the BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number). It is up to each country's national banking community to decide on the length of the BBAN for accounts in that country, but its length must be fixed for any given country.
The IBAN must not contain spaces when stored electronically. When printed on paper, however, the norm is to express it in groups of four characters, the last group being of variable length.
