What If Gmail Had Been Designed by Microsoft?

Today I want to ponder the question: what if Microsoft, not Google, had created Gmail? What would be the differences in that web mail client for users today? What if we apply some of the same design rules that brought us Hotmail, for instance?
To start, here’s the current Gmail homepage after you log-in:
http://blogoscoped.com/files/ms-gmail/1.png
First of all, we need to rebrand the application name to something longer. Let’s call this Windows Live Gmail, and add some of the visual elements connected with Windows. Also, as in Hotmail, there needs to be less space for the email subjects to make place for a reading pane, which is full of verbose explanatory help text*:
http://blogoscoped.com/files/ms-gmail/2.png
*Not shown in the screenshot, we’ll also throw in a security measurement that will prevent you from clicking on links in emails, unless you discovered the switch to mark a mail as safe. Another security measurement we’ll add is that you won’t be able to log-in with just username anymore but are required to enter the full [email protected] Furthermore, we will change the browser URL from http://gmail.microsoft.com to the more professional looking http://by114w.bay114.gmail.live.com/mail/mail.aspx?rru=home.
For another design iteration in our inbox, we will need to camouflage the checkboxes next to the messages by putting a mail icon on top of them. Also, we need to break up messages from conversation threads into their individual parts. Furthermore, this version of Gmail needs to change from context-aware text ads to context-unaware graphic banners, which we’ll require to carry at least one clip art. Gmail currently has a chat box which I don’t use and thus find annoying, so I think we can build on that and expand it to a more full-featured chat widget, replacing the labels box. We’ll also adjust the spam filter slightly to show a couple of more bulk mails in the inbox:

There’s still not enough banner space available though, so let’s add a top row for ads and move the rest a bit more down. Also, to go back to the real Microsoft spirit, the inbox will now carry a maximum of 2 MB of messages – that was the amount Hotmail offered when Gmail was released with 1 GB in April 2004. Also, Microsoft-style, the actual start page of this service will not be the inbox, but a “welcome” splash screen. Please imagine the ads blinking at this point:

Somehow, this still misses part of the Microsoft feeling – the current design is just too bright & light, and it doesn’t have enough glamor. I’ll darken the colors a bit and add some smooth shades. Also, admittedly, Hotmail is a bit slower than Google’s competing service, so we’ll add some “loading” messages. Usually there’s less focus on unclutteredness with the Redmond guys, so we’ll add some MSN news bits and “special offers” where space is left. Plus, to increase user lock-in, let’s get rid of the “sign out” link. I’m also putting less emphasis on search, moving the box to the bottom right and replacing it with a dog:

Voila, we’re done... that was easy! Your potential, their passion. Coming up tomorrow: “What if Microsoft had designed Windows Vista.” Stay tuned!

Hamdulilah this is not the case.
The best I find in Gmail is the:

search option,
speed of creating and replying to messages
Threading messages within the same conversation (best option ever seen)
IMAP option is the best added lately
Ability to check other accounts and reply from other account with one single click

NO GRAPHIC BANNERS AND NO NUDE WOMEN ON MY SCREEN :)

This is what I meant by IMAP. Unless you are still outdated and using pop3 ;)

Simply because IMAP would map all the folders you have on outlook to ur mail server and vice versa. It is a great tool to backup your mails with all the filters and the labels you might have.

IMAP is faster also and does not need long time at ur side to load the mail files where in the case of POP3, the program would build the database differently and it is slower.

Make sure you do not delete a folder in Outlook because it would delete the label in gmail and it would be hard after that to find the messages that were under that label

’man it's slow

at least with pop3 u r downloading the message once and u dont have to access the server every time u open a folder

anyway i will not judge it now..i will try to use it for a while and see.

An important notice is that with pop3 u download ur emails...so u can do the necessary to backup them and keep them safe on different storage and in different ways.

With IMAP u r relying on the server...once crashed..or maybe if hey decide to not offer frees services anymore...u risk to lose important infos

and last not least, they will keep always all ur data....but this is minor coa no real privacy in the Internet world these days

IMAP and POP3 are the same from this point of view. You can download both of them and for the privacy issue, with POP3 there are two copies of your email (one at ur computer and one at Ashelon), with IMAP (there are three copies:)) but in both cases they have all your emails.

I forgot to mention that IMAP is a newer protocol for those who have a fast enough connection.

OVerall, you can use whatever you like but for most businesses IMAP is the solution and POP3 is history now.

bilal

what i wanted to say that whenever u r online, everytime u check on a folder the synchronization will happen

with pop3 only when u decide to send/receive u will connect to server

right?

and with a relatively slow connction this is a headache

but even with this i liked it and i am using it heavily;).

u do not have to use it to please me :)
It was just a hint because there are always some features that we need and we do not know that they are available.

well, to me this poses a different kind of problem.

call me paranoid, but I don't like my files synchronized with any outside server or even a proxy.

I'll connect to the server when i want to and how i want to.

the new software that is being introduced is full of backdoors, so i'll remain a history lover and dwell on the past

for now at least

But your email was on the internet right?
Do u know how many copies are saved out of every message??? at least 5 and 10 sometimes :)

Do not be really paranoid when u do not encrypt ur messages with a self made encryption algorithm

I know that. as a matter of fact i always tell people that sending an email is like standing on a balcony and shouting its contents to the world.

what i'm worried about is giving access to my files to a remote computer.

even if i could write a self encrypted algorithm, i wouln't trust it all that much either
