A quick reminder from the Quran

Do not despair, do not exult

Yahya Abdul Rahman- Jan 8, 2007

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad ibn Abdullah is Allah's final prophet and messenger. To proceed:

Allah says in His holy book: " No misfortune can happen on earth or in your souls but is recorded in a decree before We bring it into existence: That is truly easy for Allah: In order that ye may not despair over matters that pass you by, nor exult over favours bestowed upon you. For Allah loveth not any vainglorious boaster." (Quran 57.22-23)

Perhaps in your lifetime you have experienced many misfortunes which has been accompanied with a lot of pain and sorrow. Maybe you have suffered great loss or disappointment and your days have been filled with many tears. On the other hand, you may have had a very good life and, for the most part, been free from the sufferings of what others have had to experience. You have had consistent good health, a good income, excellent educational opportunities and many other blessings which have filled you with great joy and contentment, and you find yourself pleased with what you have accomplished in life.

In the verses cited above Allah reminds us that nothing can happen to us without it first being recorded in a book of decree long before it came into existence and that this is easy for Allah. We are reminded of this, so the above verses reveal, for two reasons. First that we would not become filled with despair over those things that we wished for but did not materialize into our lives. Allah does not want us to be in despair. He is most gracious (Rahman) and most merciful (Raheem) and wants us to realize that there is a purpose behind everything that comes into our lives. Secondly, He does not want us to become proud or boastful if our lives are filled with many favours, such as good health, good income, good job, etc. He wants us to be mindful that all these things have also come about as a result of a pre-recorded decree and that we have nothing to boast about.

There will be those in life who make little effort yet seemingly have everything going for them. There are others who struggle quite hard yet never seem to never get ahead despite their consistent efforts. For each person there is a test. One may become filled with utter despair and just simply give up altogether to the point they no longer even wish to live. On the otherhand, the very blessed person may become so proud or arrogant over what they possess and begin to boast to the point Allah will become very displeased with them.

Everyday we should remind ourselves of these verses to put our lives into perspective, be continually thankful for what Allah has given us and to not be in despair when things don't work out the way we want to them to. Sometimes those things we desire are in the long run not good for us, although at the time they seem to be, while we loathe those things that are in fact good for us.

Let us ask Allah to always bring into our lives those things, situations and people that are good for us and to avoid those things which are not good for us and which, over time, take us away from the remembrance of Allah.
