A 16-year-old Ethiopian girl, who says she was tortured by her employer, has approached the Dubai Police through the Ethiopian Consulate.
The girl says she lost three teeth and suffered severe bleeding after her employer assaulted her during a fit of rage.
The Dubai Police sent her to hospital to receive treatment on June 9.
According to the Ethiopian Consulate, the girl was recruited to work as a housemaid by the Sharjah-based Al Meena Manpower Supply.
A senior official at the Ethiopian Consulate said: “She borrowed Dh3,000 to get a visa and was sent to work for a UAE family of nine.” The maid claims she was first beaten by her employer’s wife over a trivial matter.
“The man’s wife phoned the labour supply company and warned them that they would have to take me back,” the girl said through a translator.
“She removed my headscarf and cut my hair with a pair of scissors. She used matches to burn my nipples.
“I tried to resist, but she cut off my hair anyway… and the burns are still very painful,” the girl said.
The girl also told how, on one occasion, her employer’s wife took her suitcase key, bought a mobile phone and hid it in her suitcase.
The girl says that the woman then told her husband that she had stolen a mobile phone.
“Her husband … started beating me.
“I lost three teeth and started bleeding,” the distraught girl said.
She was then taken back to the labour supply company.
“There I was given some medication and sent to work with an Egyptian family,” she added.
However, as she was still bleeding from her injuries, she was not able to work.
Officials at the Ethiopian Consulate told Emirates Today that the girl “is still bleeding and so needs to receive further medical attention”.
