May I suggest a possible solution?

When John starts the next conversation with you and you're busy, just turn to him with a big smile and ask him innocently: "Do mind if we talk while we work?" I'm almost certain he will say: "No", then you grab a bunch of artcles from your pile and slap them in his lap saying: "Good" all the while smiling!! :)

to be honest I quite like this "possible solution".... but we can only achieve half of it.... because John does a different kind of job from what we do. so the pile can't be shared.
